“In order to be irreplaceable, one must always be different “ said Coco Chanel ... and nothing spells out unadulterated luxury than the luxury conglomerate LVMH that is more commonly referred to as the fashion house of Louis Vuitton Malletier or simply Louis Vuitton ... in case you are wondering Malletier is French for suitcase maker or trunk and luggage maker .... and that is precisely their origin ... Louis Vuitton, the person, was a French businessman who was the appointed luggage maker of Empress EugĂ©nie, wife of Napoleon, the last emperor of France. For the last seven consecutive years (2006–2012) Louis Vuitton has been named the world's most valuable luxury brand. With humble beginnings in 1854 as a luggage maker ... its products now range from luxury trunks and leather goods to ready-to-wear, shoes, watches, jewelry, accessories, sunglasses, and books ... it is also the most “replicated” brand in the world ... but naturally imitation is the best form of flattery :)
Louis Vuitton has managed to retain its title of being a 'legendary' brand because of the revolutionary fashion innovations in its more than 150 years of existence. For the last 15 years , LV has been headed by the skirt wearing Marc Jacobs (appointed Creative Director in 1997) ... a fashion and design stalwart ...who wears the label of 'a rebel with attitude' with unbridled flair ... armed with 33 tattoos and a Brazilian pornstar boyfriend and clinching the Time Magazine’s 2010 coveted spot of “100 most influential people in the world” ... and famous for his love of Kilts (those Scottish men skirts) and Prada pencil skirts ( he actually wears them ppl ... google images recommended for fashion novices:) ... Marc Jacob’s story with Louis Vuitton is really about a distinct vibe and an attitude- an attitude that thwarts the existing cliches and script a new set of rules. He turned Louis Vuitton from a brand into a fashion oracle- the one that dictates the trends for the world to succumb and follow !! He is the first designer to have embraced and harness the collaborative power of Fashion and Art and as a result Louis Vuitton special collection pieces have waltzed into 'collectors items' with high resale value !!
When Louis Vuitton announced their latest artist collaboration with polka-dot crazed Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama in 2012 ... both the fashion and art world sat up in anticipation !! Yayoi Kusama, is a sculptor, painter, writer, installation and performance artist. As a child, when she started to experience the hallucinations from which she has since suffered all her life, her response was to paint polka dots. She now resides in a sanitorium that she has adapted as her voluntary home. (Does that inspire you to go 'google-eyed' on her- Do that !!!) This motif has remained a central feature of her work, and expresses her feeling of revolving 'in the infinity of endless time and the absoluteness of space,' and her view of herself as 'a dot lost among a million other dots'. Marc Jacob’s admiration for this eccentric Japanese artist is well known. A passionate art collector, the designer was already a fan of her paintings, sculptures and “obsessive characteristics” at the time of their meeting in 2006. Louis Vuitton showed off their new collection in a special project space called the Concept Store that was transformed with Kusama's into a polka dotted galaxy of sorts 'dotted (excuse the obsession with the word 'dots') with her signature giant pumpkins. Also, in an unprecedented move, Selfridges, London devoted all of their 24 department store windows to one brand. The incredible take-over started on August 24th 2012 and ran through October 19th 2012. Have a look at the pics!
